INTRODUCTION

History

                       

            Ramanathapuram Division was formed on 15.02.1956 from Madurai Postal Division which existed during pre independence period. Further, subsequent developments made it necessary to bifurcate Ramanathapuram Divison for administrative convenience and as a result, Virudhunagar Division was formed with class status w.e.f. 01.09.1970. After that, a class II division with headquarters at Karaikudi was formed on 02.07.1973 carving out areas from Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar Divisions. Further, a class II division named as Manamadurai Division in class II status was formed with effect from 01.12.1980. In order to locate the headquarters of Postal division in the District Headquarters on formation of Sivaganga District by the Govt. of Tamilnadu,  Manamadurai Division was shifted to DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS “SIVAGANGA”  vide Directorate No. 13-5/96-PE I dt. 23.12.1997 and renamed as SIVAGANGA DIVISION.

           

II. AREA AND POPULATION

This Division covers a total area of 2640 Sq.Km and serves a population of 7.24 lakhs approximately.

III. POLITICAL

            Sivaganga is the only Lok Sabha Constituency in this Division represented by Hon’ble Union Minister for Home Shri.P. Chidambaram. Sivaganga, Manamadurai, Tiruppattur and Ilayangudi are the Head quarters of State Assembly constituencies in this Division.
